Alarm goes off at 4.30 stumble down stairs make flask and load gear in to car. sharp brrrrr its cold!!!! But at least I didn’t have to get scraper out. Job done it’s off to pick Rick up an hour and a half’s journey to Folkestone. After a trouble free journey on the M25 I reach Ricks and load the car and off to Hythe to fish the Royal Military Canal . On way we notice the canal in parts were frozen. Our destination was to fish at the Hythe to Dymchurch railway. We parked up and decided to go for a look. Our hearts sank, frozen solid I tested it with an ounce and a half weight only to see it bounce over the ice. So Rick racked his brains to think of another spot which might be clear. So off back to car and head off to the Seabrook end of the canal right on the coast.
After stopping at garage to grab a hot coffee and some hot pies we parked up and put our warm cloths on. Poor old teddy left his thermals behind (how convenient) so he decided to stay in car while we set off for some fishing. As we only had a few hours we decided to set up 3 rods. One rod fished hard on the bottom with smelt soaked in dynamite baits red scent trail additive fished under a medium loaded pencil float and a 12” wire trace with size 6 trebles. The second and third we same set ups apart from one was just tripping bottom and the other up in water. Time past and not a sniff so we decide to recast to different areas by this time the wind was biting cold and went to see if I had left my fishing umbrella in the car and to check on teddy (who was asleep on the dashboard) but no I had taken it out. So we had to grin and bear it. Paul the bailiff for the controlling club Cinque Ports Angling Society came along for the £5 each day ticket money and said sport had been very slow in this cold weather over the past couple of days. We chatted about the other club waters and decided as nothing doing to call it a day as we were getting so cold
We decided to go and have a look at some lakes near Folkestone called Beachborough lakes.Although frozen we liked the look of them and decided to give them ago in the summer. Back to Ricks for a much needed cup of tea and a warm up and for Rick to show me how to make a few rigs, god those size 6 hooks only used to 18 to 24’s being a match angler at least I can see them big ones. With those complete I head for home.
Lesson of the day is Think like teddy and stay in the warm
