Five Star Baits.

Five Star Baits is quite a new comer to a already crowded market, They knew this when they launched their range of baits, they had to compete against the big boys such as Mainline, Nash, Richworth. If they was to succeed they knew their bait not only had to be a instant winner on waters but also appealing to the angler as well. How many times have you stood in a tackle shop picked up a bag of bait had a look and thought well I dont like the look of that. Sure they could of made their baits bright pink to stand out against the rest of the other baits in the shop. Instead they opted for subtle colours that you see in most baits, they was going to let the results speak for themselves. Priced arouns £9 per kilo they are what I would class as mid market, although they are not just coloured semo balls with no nutrional value to the fish.

Five Star sent me a sample pack of 4 different flavours. Now they sent them to me to review because they know I will give a honest no bullshit review of them.

The first thing I notice is these baits are fresh and i mean proper fresh not a few weeks old. They are not hard like musket balls but instead a nice spongy moist consistancy. they will split with some firm pressure from your forefinger and thumb. The smell these baits give off is just amazing, there was no guessing what they was meant to be.

The first flavour I opened was the Banana and Seed mix, Anyone who knows me knows I have a weakness for bananas and the smell of them makes me vomit. I opened these boilies and after I came back from the bathroom after depositing my lunch....The only way I can describe the smell of them is banana milkshake (my worst nightmare) The boilies have a yellow/brown colour to them and you can see flecks of what I think is niger seed. Once i split one open I notice the middle is just right not too under cooked that its all doughy but not overcooked so its like a bullet and you cant crumble them.
The Taste Test:
Ok So i taste every boilie I mean if its good enough for carp its good enough for me. I have lost count of the amount of times I have tried a tutti fruitti boilie and thought they taste nothing like the real thing. These are different, they taste of banana with soft undertones of condensed milk. These boilies have a low oil content as well which makes them Ideal for winter fishing.
If you want a winter boilie that not everyone is using this could well be the one for you!

The second flavour: (Smoked Fish)
These boilies are a dark green/brown colour, I can see what looks like egg shell and oyster shell in them as well. When I open the bag the first thing that hits me is the smell, think of a harbour on a warm day, I can smell fish instantly. On breaking one open I can see more niger seed, egg shell and oyster shell, These shell peices will give the bait some crunch and also some vitamins and minerals carp need in their daily diet. I also notice bits of hemp in there, the oils this produces are a natural proven feed inducer so tempting a bite should be too hard. After the inital hit of the fish smell calmed down I could pinpoint the smell to something like Kippers
The Taste Test:
Not a pleasent taste to me, but I can see why Carp, Cats and Barble would want some of these. A oily fishy taste and as it looked there is a real crunch to these bad boys! Because of the oil content I would imagine these will work best in warmer weather or where the water is abit warmer than about 62c

The Third Flavour: (The Nutz)
These boilies have a light brown near beige colour to them with flecks of darker niger seed, they have a subtle nutty smell to them not over powering but not of just peanut either like the DT Baits (The Blend), Once I split a bait open the inside is might lighter in colour and there is a stronger smell of nuts, It is hard to pinpoint the nuts used in this boilie
The Taste Test:
The first thing to hit you is a sweet creamy taste and a prominent hazlenut (I think) Taste, then you get undertones of peanut, vanilla and coconut, you can make out small bits of actual nut to give the bait some crunch, there is a high oil content but it is a natural oil so it should be ok in most weathers. If your local lake has a ban on nuts, or the fish take the Cell boilie alot then this is the one for you.

The Fourth Flavour (Fish Mix)
Without a shadow of a doubt this is Five Stars most popular bait, holding lake record over 3 different Countries, 20 years in developement you know this is going to be a strong bait. Its a deep red/Plum colour with lighter flecks of what looks like oyster shell. The smell is Fishy but not as strong as the Smoked fish boilie. I think there is a hint of blackcurrent in it, along with fishmeals, pre-digested fishmeal and according to their website, 10 other fine ingredients. They customise this bait and the oil content depending on the time of year, so in winter months when less oil is required they drop the oil content. This is not something you would get from one of the big boys, It goes to show Five Star have the angler in mind and produce baits to catch fish and not the angler. You can be confident in using this bait all year around and getting results.
The Taste Test:
A slightly salty flavour to it and quite a crumbly boilie, still moist but the fishmeal used means the flavours and smells will leak out quite easliy, there is a very subtile fish taste which is hard to pinpoint. There is also a slight crunch from the shell in the boilie.
To get the best out of this boilie I would recommend using their matching stick mix and using very small pva bags.

Overall the 4 baits I have been sent I have been impressed with, they are fresh, HNV for the fish, some thing different and well made. The smells and look of the bait means you know that these balls of goodness are going to repeatly put carp on the bank. You wont find five Star baits in the tackle shop because their baits are made fresh. You can order them direct from their website where they offer a very quick delivery, a range of other products and they accept PayPal. check them out here http://www.fivestarbaits.com and dont forget to tell them you read it here!
