DT Baits

Normally we do 1 page for each bait however, with DT Baits I'm going to do things a bit different. I’m going to report on 3 of their baits but before I do I know some of you would never have heard of DT Baits so a little bit about who they are, where they came from and what they are all about.

From their website:

DT Bait was first established in 1988 by Co founders Dave Thorpe with a vision of creating the highest quality Carp baits available on the commercial market. In 1997 DT Baits completed acquisition of Cotswold Baits to help improve its market share in Europe. Due to health reasons DT Bait and Cotswold Baits were sold by its owner in 2003 to the current business partners and avid carp anglers: - Simon Hammersley and James Willsmer.

Along side these 2 top anglers is a impressive team as well, Their team includes the legendary Keith Sykes who if you know anything about bait, this guy is  legend in this area, he was involved with the original Cotswold baits before it was taken over by DT, and in 2008 he returned home to Cotswolds/DT baits, he is a regular in the big carp magazines for his knowledge and expertise in baits and nutrition. Nigel Sharp is also a part of their team, Nigel will be a name familiar to many following his carp catching exploits across the South of England with many of the Nations favourite carp in his photo album. He has an enviable track record with a rake of 40’s under his belt topped by the magnificent and elusive Burghfield Common at over 50lb’s. One of the most successful anglers of his generation, Nigel is also steeped in carp fishing history. Among his previous catches are glorious fish like Bazil, Heather and the stunning Shoulders from Horton.

Even though DT Baits have been around for nearly 25 years it’s only been in recent years that their bait has taken off in a big way on the Carp Scene. I have used 3 of their baits and I was very impressed with them, truth be known if my local tackle shop still stocked them I would still be using them however the only way for me to get their bait now is to order online which when you add postage makes a expensive boilie.

Normally their baits retail for around £11 a kilo so sort of mid market price range. The 3 baits I have used are the outstanding N Blend, their Pukka fish with Oily chicken and their Winter bait Green beast.

Ill start with the Pukka fish with oily chicken, this was the first bait i used and I used it at Orchard Place Farm just outside Paddock wood. I was fishing on lake 4 with the bait, The boilies have a nice deep red colour to them thank to the Robin Red which is used in the making of them, they are quite a soft boilie and have a very meaty smell. Once you split a boilie open you can see the bits of seed combined with the fishmeal used. There is also a strong smell of the ever successful GLM. The boilies themselves retain the scent for a long period of time (well by long, the longest we had the boilie in the water was 4 hours, the rest of the time the fish was eating them!) We found that these boilies was a instant attraction to what can be very hook shy fish. On the lake when we was fishing was 7 other people and only myself and Paul caught, he was also using the same boilies. Well worth a space in your bait bucket.

As the year moved on the water temperatures went down so it was time to revisit the baits I was going to use, you see winterised this and that all over the place these days however, with my luck on the Oily chicken there was only one contender for me, DT Baits Green Beast, this is a creamy white colour boile (why its called green beast is beyond me) The boilie like the olily chicken bait has a nice soft texture to it and a very sweet, nearly like a sherbet smell to it, the bait uses water soluble milk proteins and a highly digestible bird food base mix. The smell and taste of these boilies is so unique I haven’t been able to work out what they put in it but all I can say is these boilies work, I have caught in the harshest of conditions, with ice and snow on my bivvy.

The final boilie is their quite new N Blend, This is a brown/beige boilie with lighter coloured flecks in it, the bait itself smells a bit like peanut butter, when you split one open you can see all the crunchy nuts and seeds inside it and there is also a noticeable smell of Cream as well, If like me you taste the baits you will instantly get the nut and a thick creamy texture, one I would expect from something like a premium chocolate bar not a fish bait. If you imagine a Snickers bar for fish then this is it. It is designed as a all year around bait although I have only used it in the summer months. I found the bait did give me the edge, I don’t know if it was because of the crunchy nuts or the thick creamy smell it puts out but there is something in this bait that just seems to work.

If you happen to know of anyone in the Folkestone area that stocks the DT Range please contact me and let me know!
